Corrosion
Occurance
There are four factors which must be present for corrosion to occur.
Anode : The anode is that part of the metal that corrodes, i.e. dissolves in the electrolyte.
Cathode : Metal surface where electrons from the anode (via the electronic path) react with the electrolyte.
Electrolyte : A media which conducts electric current by ionic movement, e.g. water, soil.
Metallic (electronic) pathway : Allows electricity to flow from the anode to the cathode in the form of electrons. Metals corrode under all conditions. Metals undergo chemical reactions when exposed, and have a tendency to revert to their original form. Nonmetals such as plastic degrade by U.V. rays of sunlight.
