Coating

A clear or pigmented film forming material, which protects the surface to which it is applied from the effects of the environments.

Generally, a coating is classified as organic or inorganic. Most of the coatings are organic. The binder in an organic coating is made from tung oil, caster oil, linseed oil, fish oil, coal, petroleum, etc. These coatings all contain carbon.

An inorganic coating is based on the use of an inorganic binder such as sodium silicate, calcium silicate, lithium silicate and ethyl silicate.
